If changing of jobs has been on your mind, we often get asked, is winter a good time to change jobs, so we thought we would address this.
Surprisingly the answer is yes, it’s actually a great time to change roles. Here’s just a few reasons why…
1. Less competition. Okay, hands up who is sick of watching their friends posting on Instagram from hot, sunny, warm places in the Northern hemisphere, while you are stuck at work, dealing with the Melbourne winter? You’ve probably not made the connection, but there are LOTS of people away travelling. This correlates to less competition when applying for jobs. Here you are, potentially sitting there, available, and ready! A lot of people decide to bunker down and literally hide under a blanket (to keep warm!) and this again, reduces the competition and increases your chances of standing out!
2. Increased hiring needs. Many companies take the time at the start of new financial year to re-evaluate and assess their staffing needs. This planning phase often includes identifying talent gaps and initiating the recruitment process and new positions can become available. Annual budgets are put in place and some roles that have been put off until planning has been done, are now available. Candidates can position themselves well to take advantage of these increased needs and applying for jobs during this time makes the most of these timely hiring initiatives.
3. Networking opportunities. Although its winter, many companies have excellent networking events, conferences, and seminars. Attending these events can provide candidates with opportunities to connect with professionals in your field, expand your network and hear about job openings before they are widely advertised.
4. Holidays and time off. Some people choose to take time off during the winter. This can make it an ideal time to work in job interviews, rather than having to juggle interviews between working hours.
5. Get to learn a new job while it’s quieter – before the spring rush starts. If you are looking at changing careers, where a whole new skill set is needing to be learnt, taking a job in winter, while it’s quieter and there is more down time to learn is a great opportunity. Real Estate trends show that winter is quieter and having a few months of on-the-job training prior to the busy season starting will set you up well.
Don’t write winter off as a no-go zone for changing jobs, as you can see there are some compelling reasons why now could be the perfect time to move!
